It’s a comfort to Hilda to have Salem still around; although familiars usually died not long after their masters did, in this particular case Sabrina had entered into a contract with Salem where they were equals, and in the absence of a precedent, Hilda can only assume that is the reason why Salem has survived. She doesn’t want to question it too much, she’d rather make the most of having him around, (for however long that lasts – while Salem has remained with the Spellmans longer than any other familiar is known to have survived their deceased master, Hilda is always aware that he could be taken from them at any time).
Although he’s been there for all the family, Salem’s attached himself a lot to Ambrose; Hilda thinks back to the time when Ambrose had been determined to adopt Connor’s iguana familiar only for the iguana to die shortly afterwards, and Zelda pointing out that Ambrose wasn’t supposed to have a familiar anyway. Released from his house arrest and cleared of all charges, restrictions no longer applied to Ambrose, leaving him and Salem free to form an attachment. Hilda smiles to herself as she watches Salem following Ambrose everywhere, remembering the way Sabrina had done the same thing when she was about five years old and how it had driven him crazy at the time. Ambrose laughs when Hilda reminds him of that, says that as long as Salem is still with them, a part of him will always feel like Sabrina is still with them too.
