He’d never heard her so blatantly admit to lying to someone whom she claimed was her best friend before, and he wasn’t really sure what to do about that development. “I lied to her because she won’t shut up about my every sin, whether it’s the fact that I love our daughter or the fact that I wasn’t a virgin when we got married, or the fact that I eat dessert, or even the fact that, yes, sometimes I like having a damned cigarette.” She seemed entirely interested in her lap. “So I told her that I’d quit, because it wasn’t fun without you, and she’d bought it. Never mind that I’ve been lighting a candle in the loo to hide the fact that that’s where I have my cigarettes. I don’t need her to judge me for it.”
“Hey, I don’t care if you lied to her,” he whispered. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. “I just want you to be happy, that’s all.”
